Bringing the element of fire to the garden adds heaps of drama to your outdoor space. A fire is mesmerizing and the containers to hold fires are striking garden elements, even when they are not ablaze. In this photo, a Smith and Hawken copper bowl from Target, turns amazing patina shades from the heat. The screen is comforting as it keeps the sparks from flying.
A firepit, bowl, chiminea, or even a hole in the ground with a rock border instantly takes you up north to the lake cabin, without leaving your urban backyard. Better (and safer) if you can set-up camp away from the house. It’s also a wonderful way to use scrap wood from trimming trees and shrubs.
The ash is also a nice addition to the compost bin.

Love, hugs and kisses to my favorite gardener, cook, photographer, potter, painter and writer.
